Getting Self Tan right

Three things complete the picture of how you imagine yourself strutting down the beach: a perfect bikini, stunning physique and a radiant glow. While you might be able to achieve two of these things, the last is always the most difficult when you’re short of time or just going in to the summer season. That said, choosing the self-tan option is always better than spending hours on end under the UV rays anyway, regardless of how much time you have.

So how exactly do you get that perfect even summer glow without any orange streaks? The first thing you need to do is select the self-tan best suited to your skin tone. Make sure the bottle explains or shows how it will turn out on your skin.

The next step is preparing your skin to apply the self-tan. You need to keep your skin in good condition so that it can absorb the self-tan properly. Dry skin won’t respond well to your faux tan. In order to solve this problem you need to exfoliate your body with a body scrub and loofah. Another important part of this step, which we ladies tend to forget, is to shave our legs and underarms. After this you need to apply moisturiser to all the areas that are most likely to get dry.

Now it’s time to apply the self-tan… make sure you are standing in front of a full length mirror and are wearing tanning mitts to avoid getting orange hands. Start from your feet and work your way up in even strokes, and avoid rubbing aggressively as this tends to make it come out unevenly. After applying the self-tan make sure to wear dark loose clothing to avoid stains.

The tan should start to show within three to four hours. If it looks a little bit orange you can make it lighter by rubbing your skin with a cloth soaked in lemon juice. How long your tan lasts varies from person to person, but most of the time it will last a couple of days before it starts to fade.

Another important thing to remember is that the removal is just as important as the application. Use lemon juice and an exfoliator to make sure the self-tan doesn’t come off in patches.

So once you have achieved the perfect Gisele Bündchen glow, flaunt it. Hit the club scene, prance on the streets in a summer frock and go for a dip in the ocean without the fear of looking orange, or worse, pasty white.
