Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California

Pfeiffer Beach, with its occasional purple sand, is among several places on the Big Sur coast bearing the name of one of the area’s pioneering families. The beach’s towering rock formations create an additional sense of awe, as does the adventure of getting there. (The beach is notoriously tricky to find, but that makes the incredible sights even more rewarding.)
