Beach Tips

Summer has finally arrived! The time to whip out those bikinis and set off on holiday for some well-deserved relaxation on the beach has come. However, for many of us, summer also brings the temptation of overdoing the tan, but luckily we’ve got the best tips for you to stay safe and protected.

Exfoliate

Summer means an increase of dead skin cells and therefore it is important to exfoliate in order to keep your skin smooth and silky. You don’t need to buy any expensive products to achieve that summer glow; you can simply make your own exfoliation scrub using a handful of coffee or raw sugar, some coconut- or olive oil and a drop of peppermint or vanilla extract to keep the scrub smelling delightful.

Always apply sunscreen

It is important to use a sunscreen lotion of at least SPF 30 in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Minimize your tanning time in the sun during peak hours between 11am and 3pm and if you are planning to be out in the sun for a long period of time, reapply sunscreen every two to three hours.

Drink plenty of water

During those hot summer days, heat and sweat can leave you feeling dehydrated. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can lead to many forms of discomfort. It is extremely important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight to nine glasses of water a day. Bored of water? Add some fruit to your water for flavour or settle for a healthy alternative like green tea.

Get in the water

Summer is the perfect time of the year to get wet! A 30 minute swim session can burn up to 400 calories! If swimming laps isn’t your thing, join a water aerobics class or create your own routine by marching and jogging in the water.

Protect those glossy locks

One’s hair suffers a lot during summer. Constant heat, sun damage and chlorine takes a toll on one’s hair and can leave it feeling dry and dull after the holidays. Applying conditioner to your hair before a day in the sun will help keep your hair soft and minimize the loss of moisture. Try to reduce the use of hairdryers, straighteners and other heating products and opt for a natural towel dry.
