Celebrate Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year and Spring Festival, is one of the biggest festivals in China and is celebrated around the world. It marks the beginning of the Chinese calendar year and is celebrated on the first new moon between 21 January and 20 February, which means it falls on 28 January this year – that’s this weekend!

Unlike like western New Year, for which the celebration lasts a single day, Chinese New Year is celebrated for a full two weeks and is concluded with the Lantern Festival. Almost everywhere that has any kind of Chinese population celebrates the occasion, and because it’s their biggest event of year they usually pull out all the stops.

There are numerous customs and traditions that surround the celebration ranging from annual reunion dinners and house cleansing, to extravagant decorations and fantastic fireworks displays. This year is the year of the Rooster, so expect to see many appropriately themed creations.

Even if you’re not Chinese, it’s an incredible celebration to partake in and if you’re able to join a local party we highly recommend it. Communities in countries across the world observe the occasion, and you’ll find celebrations in Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Mauritius, the Philippine, New York, Peru, Canada, Australia, and many more!
