A true Valley Girl from Northridge, California, Jessica Strother looks like an Amazonian princess displaced in the modern world. The green-eyed beauty began modelling at age 14, and has worked with the likes of Kate Spade and Timo Weiland. A daddy’s girl through and through, she hopes that one day soon she’ll make it big and rock the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. As you'll learn below, she's always believed in herself and at a young age made the bold move to go at it alone in the big city – a gamble that proved well worth it. While shooting on location in Borneo, we stole her from Gavin Bond for a few minutes to shoot some questions her way.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST VIVID CHILDHOOD MEMORY?
Probably doing sleepovers with my best friend in elementary school. We’re still actually in contact, and are still very good friends. We used to dress up and wear her mom’s heels, and play with little baby dolls, or we’d take out the Barbie laptop and pretend we were at work!
WHAT WOULD YOUR FIVE-YEAR-OLD SELF BE PROUD OF?
Being independent, for sure. And, that I moved to New York, moving away from my family.
ANYTHING YOUR YOUNGER SELF WOULD BE SURPRISED BY?
That I’m a model, coming as far as I have. I’d always wanted to model, but getting discovered is always by chance. My mom tried sending my pictures to agencies, but they never replied.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND LEARN ONE SKILL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Learning another language. I really wish I knew French… or Italian.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Always stay true to who you are. Don’t let other people try to persuade you to do something you shouldn’t be doing, or don’t want to do.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST TREASURED MOMENT AT GAYA ISLAND RESORT?
That it felt like a very authentic experience. I loved paddle-boarding and kayaking, being so close to nature, and seeing so many different animals.
